Regular home care

The Statistical Report concerning the count provides information on the number of clients receiving regular home care and the services they have received. Furthermore, it gives various information on clients in home-help services and home nursing, including their age structure, need for care, required place of care, reasons for the start of service recipiency and previous places of care. The data are given partly by municipality, partly at the level of the whole country. The count of home-care clients has been conducted since 1995. In the form of online publications, statistical reports are available from 1999 onwards.

Count of Regular Home-Care Clients, 30.11.2010

The percentage of older people regularly receiving home-care services increased slightly on the year before. At the end of November 2010, 11.9 per cent of the population aged 75 and over were receiving home-care services on a regular basis. The proportion varied between different regions, between 9.3 and 15.0 per cent.

People in need of continuous 24-hour care accounted for 6.0 per cent of all regular home-care clients. In the different regions, the percentage of people in need of continuous 24-hour care varied between 4.3 per cent and 22.9 per cent. Just under a quarter (22.8%) of clients receiving home-care services had had more than 60 visits a month. There are considerable differences between regions in the number of visits. There was a great deal of variation in the number of visits even to the most elderly clients.

More than half (56.5%) of clients entered regular home care directly from home. Just over a quarter (26.7%) of the clients came from a hospital or health centre. In most cases, the reason for admission was physical (25.3%) or neglect of personal care (27.1%).

It was estimated by the staff that a great majority (84.2%) of clients had received the treatment best suited to their needs, that is, home care. It was further determined that 3847 clients (5.6%) could manage at home by themselves, without regular home-care services.
