National Institute for Health and Welfare to start operations 1 January 2009
National Institute for Health and Welfare
Work is well underway on the new research and development centre for welfare and health to be formed through the merger of STAKES and the National Public Health Institute (KTL). The new organisation, the National Institute for Health and Welfare, will start operations on 1 January 2009. This means that KTL and STAKES will close and all personnel will transfer to the new institute.
The President signed the law on the institute on 31 October 2008. On 27 November 2008, the Government appointed Professor Pekka Puska, MD, PhD, MPolSc, as Director General of the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). Appointed for a five-year term, Professor Puska will take office on 1 January 2009.
Background
A report was completed in 2007 on the need to redirect the resources of the agencies and institutes under the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. In February 2008, Minister of Health and Social Services Paula Risikko put forward a proposal on the merger of STAKES and the National Public Health Institute (KTL) to form a new research centre for welfare and health as from 1 January 2009.
The new institute will be located in Helsinki and it will have regional satellite offices in the cities where the two organisations currently operate. The aim is to transfer some 100 person-years to the satellite offices by 2015.
