The National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) created through
the merger of the National Public Health Institute (KTL) and the
National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health
(STAKES) will commence operating at the start of 2009.

Pekka Puska appointed Director General of the National
Institute for Health and Welfare

On 27 November 2008, the Government appointed Professor Pekka Puska
as Director General of the National Institute for Health and
Welfare (THL). The Institute will start operations on 1 January
2009.

New act gives shape to the National Institute for Health and
Welfare
11 November 2008
The National Institute for Health and Welfare will start operations
on 1 January 2009, headed by its new Director General to be
appointed in November 2008. The act and decree on the new institute
were adopted at the end of October. According to Mauno Konttinen,
Director General of STAKES, the organisational model for the
1300-strong institute will also be finalised well in time for the
Christmas party.

Stakes and the National Public Health Institute to be
joined
STAKES and the National Public Health Institute
(KTL) will be joined to form a new research centre on welfare and
health. The new organization will start operations on January 1,
2009.
The new institute will emphasize the common development needs of
social and health care and have a strong customer focus. The new
institute will be located in Helsinki and it will have regional
satellite offices in the cities where the two organizations
currently operate. The aim is to move about 100 man-years to the
satellite offices by 2015.
