SOTKAnet offers key social and health care figures on European countries
The newly extended data content of the SOTKAnet web service (www.sotkanet.fi) from STAKES covers key social and health care data that can now also be searched at the level of European countries.
SOTKAnet is a web-based databank maintained by STAKES that supports policy-makers and experts in the social and health sector in planning, monitoring and decision-making. The service offers free population data on social welfare and health care in Finnish municipalities dating from 1990 onwards.
The new set of European-level indicators is mostly based on the social and health indicators gathered by Eurostat, the Directorate-General for Health and Consumer Production (Sanco) of the European Commission and the Nordic Social-Statistical Committee NOSOSCO.
Data are available on the following topic areas:
- Demographic and socio-economic factors
- Health status
- Health determinants
- Utilisation of health services
- Social and health care resources
The new indicators can be accessed on the SOTKAnet search page by choosing European indicators from the 'Choose an indicator group' drop-down menu. The European data can be viewed numerically and also graphically, though not in the form of a map. A description of the data content of each European indicator can be found by clicking on the information icon link found on the left side of the indicator name. The new set of European indicators will be further complemented during spring 2008.
When comparing data from different countries, it should be remembered that there may be major differences between statistical practices.
