What are the origins of the Finns? – A peculiar people on Europe’s genetic map 16-17 March 2010

Welcome to hear interesting research findings on the genomics of Finns and to listen to presentations by leading international researchers at the Launch Event of the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) on 16–17 March 2010.

The press conference will be held on Tuesday, 16 March 2010 at Biomedicum in Helsinki, address: Haartmaninkatu 8, seminar room 3, P-floor, from 12:45 to 13:30.

The Finnish Gene Atlas, compiled by the researchers of FIMM and their collaborators which contains genome-wide gene marker data for more than 40,000 Finns, will be made public at the event. The first findings obtained with this collection, which is exceptionally extensive for Europe, pertain to determination of genetic differences between the populations of Finnish dialect areas. They demonstrate, for instance, that despite the relatedness of their languages, Finns are no closer to the Hungarians than, say, the Dutch.

Programme

Director, Professor Olli Kallioniemi, FIMM:
The Finnish Genome Project

Senior Researcher Samuli Ripatti, FIMM:
The Finnish Gene Atlas – Finns on the gene map of Europe

FiDiPro Professor Jonathan Knowles, FIMM:
Genomics and Personalized Medicine

Professor Marja Makarow, Chief Executive of the European Science Foundation (ESF) and the Chair of the Board of FIMM, and Professor Kai Simons of Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of FIMM, will also be present at the event.

A light lunch will be served.

Registration for the press conference not later than 10 March 2010 to Sari Kivikko, e-mail sari.kivikko(at)thl.fi, or tel. 020610 8272. Sari Kivikko will also take requests for individual appointments to interview the experts present at the press conference.

In addition, representatives of the media will have the opportunity to attend the Launch Event itself on 16–17 March 2010. The event programme is appended. Registration for the event at: http://www.fimm.fi/en/news/fimm_launch_event/. The keyword for registration is FIMM2010.

The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is an international research institute that began research activities in 2008. FIMM works in close cooperation with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and with the Norwegian and Swedish centres for molecular medicine (Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine). At the national level, FIMM is a joint unit of the University of Helsinki, the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS), the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

FIMM generates new knowledge on the etiological basis of diseases. Its aim is to promote application of research results in the field of molecular medicine for the diagnostics, treatment and prevention of diseases and the development of personalized medicine. FIMM recruits new research group leaders to Finland in accordance with the EMBL model and takes part in international researcher education.
